The rules

How it plays

  1. White moves first; players then alternate one legal move at a time.
  2. Each piece follows its standard movement and capture rules.
  3. Castling, en passant and pawn promotion are supported.
  4. A move may never leave its own king in check.
  5. Checkmate wins; stalemate, repetition, the fifty-move rule and insufficient material can draw.
Availability note. Local play is available now. Arena and tournament features arrive as their online service opens, game by game — the offline game never depends on them.

Standard

The classic 8×8 starting array.

  • Sixteen pieces per side.
  • White moves first and standard castling rights apply.

Chess960

Fischer Random with 960 legal back-rank arrangements.

  • Bishops begin on opposite-coloured squares.
  • The king begins between the rooks and Black mirrors White.

Four Towers

An authored study built around rook coordination.

  • Each side has four rooks, one king and eight pawns.
  • Standard chess movement, checkmate and promotion rules remain in force.
